The nation has been shaken by the tragic death of George Floyd. People have been outraged by his death and are now protesting in the streets. The racism still present in the US in this day and age is just crazy.
Killer Mike, an activist and rapper, delivered a powerful and emotional speech to protestors in Atlanta and asked for them not to “burn down your own home” but instead asked protestors to “plot, plan, organize, strategize and mobilize in an effective way.” It looks like his speech really moved New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman, who shared it on social media:
In his speech, Killer Mike mentioned that he was “tired of seeing black men die” but added that burning property was not the right course of action. He explained that the entire situation is making him mad, but he has the biggest problem with the way that George lost his life, under the knee of a white police officer who killed him for no apparent reason. He added:
“[Chauvin] casually put his knee on a human being’s neck for nine minutes as he died like a zebra in the clutch of a lion’s jaw. So that’s why children are burning it to the ground. They don’t know what else to do. And it is the responsibility of us to make this better right now. We don’t want to see one officer charged, we want to see four officers prosecuted and sentenced. We don’t want to see targets burning, we want to see the system that sets up for systemic racism burnt to the ground.”
Killer Mike also said that he has “a lot of love and respect for police officers”, but he “watched a white officer assassinate a black man, and I know that tore your heart out.”
It was a cruel act on the part of the officers included, and now they are seeing the consequences of their actions.
