The 2020 NFL Draft went by quickly and left us to think about the choices that were made and the ones that weren’t.
While everyone thought that the New England Patriots were going to go for a quarterback with one of their earlier picks, they decided against picking a quarterback in the draft. Instead, they looked through the undrafted agents and decided to sign Michigan’s Brian Lewerke. The 23-year old was a three-year starter during college and finished his career with 3,079 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
Lewerke becomes the third quarterback on the Patriots roster, behind Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer. You can see that Tom Brady is absent from the list as he left the Patriots earlier this year to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a move that caused the Patriots to be in need of a new quarterback.
At the moment, Stidham is expected to be the starting quarterback for the team next year. This will give Lewerke time to adjust to being in the league and he will also have the option to learn from Hoyer who has been in the league for quite a few years now.
On the other hand, Patriots head coach came out after the draft to say that his team had planned on taking a quarterback with one of their picks but the time just wasn’t right:
“The bottom line is we’re evaluating the position along with all the other ones. If we feel like we find the right situation, we certainly draft them. We’ve drafted them in multiple years in multiple points in the draft. It didn’t work out the last three days. It wasn’t by design. It could have, but it didn’t.”
With many new players entering the team this year, we are yet to see if all of them will manage to fit in quickly.
