The New England Patriots have already lost a lot of star players in free agency.
Just some of the players that we have seen walk away from the Patriots are Tom Brady, Stephen Gostkowski, Kyle Van Noy, Nate Ebner, Ted Karras, and a bunch of other players. Will the next be Defensive Player of the Year, Stephon Gilmore? Many analysts seem to think that the logical thing for Bill Belichick is to either extend his contract or trade him to another team.
At the moment, New England has less than $2 million in cap space to work with, so the team is definitely keen on salvaging some money. With Gilmore carrying the highest cap hit on the Patriots in 2020 at $18.67 million, he seems to be next in line to be cut. However, having him exit the team would leave the Patriots with a big hole on defense.
It would be devastating for the Patriots to lose another star player this offseason but it could be expected from Belichick. He did let the ultimate franchise player leave, didn’t he?!
Gilmore actually had a very emotional statement to share after Brady announced he was not returning to the Patriots. He went on social media to share:
“I saw how TB worked everyday in practice and prepare everyday to be the great player he is. I applied that to myself and that’s why I’ve become the player I am till this day. Thanks for showing me how to be great and stay great each and everyday. It was a pleurae to suit up with you during my career.”
Brady has also praised Gilmore a lot in the past:
“He’s one of the great corners that will go down to ever play this game. We’ve had quite a few of those here, and it’s been a privilege for me to play with a lot of those guys, but Steph is just playing as well as anyone who’s ever played the position. It’s just incredible to watch.”
If Gilmore leaves the Patriots after all, we would love for him to join forces with Brady in the Bucs!
