The biggest news of the day football-wise is the release of Antonio Brown. He had a falling out with the Oakland Raiders after which he demanded and got a release. Now, he is looking for a new team.
At the same time, a player is securing his place on his current team. We are talking about New England Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones that is reportedly signing a contract extension with the team.
Back in March of this year, the Patriots placed the second-round tender on the restricted free agent to-be. With this, Jones was prevented from hitting the open market, and guaranteed compensation for New England in case another team was intent on acquiring the versatile defensive back. The tender is something like a non-guaranteed one-year contract worth $3.095 million.
Jones went undrafted as a rookie but fit in with the Patriots roster perfectly. He is expected to be the Patriots’ top pure slot cornerback and a potential safety in specific packages as well as a four-unit special teamer. His qualities have secured him a place on the defending champions’ team.
The Patriots are coming off an amazing win on Super Bowl LIII. Even though there were many doubts about them in the previous season, they managed to outplay everyone and finished on top yet again. Winning Super Bowl LIII brought them their sixth overall title, tying them with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most wins in league history.
While the Patriots might have lost some valuable players this offseason, they added many more that are expected to be very beneficial for the team. They are going to make another run for the title and possibly win their second consecutive title. There is nothing less expected from a dynasty led by the great Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. Make sure to tune in this weekend for the team’s first regular-season game against the Steelers!
